How we started
Marimac combines an acknowledgment of both my Uncle Mario and my grandfather (Lolo) Emilio Macalino.
Uncle Mario died of AIDS when he was 34. Lolo Emilo gave up his life as a surgeon in World War II when he was less than 30.
I went into public health because I saw firsthand how stigma, ignorance, fear, and social bias impacted the trajectory of my uncle’s journey as an HIV-infected individual and a gay man in New York. My experience over the years further reinforced the importance of knowledge, communication, scientific rigor, and the power of data. However, witnessing my uncle’s journey taught me that none of that meant anything if it wasn’t grounded in my commitment to how these tools can make a difference for people, and amplify the voice of communities who are often forgotten. This extends beyond the populations I’m focused on and includes collaborators, partners, and my staff.
Marimac Insight embodies this same commitment. I started this company to provide senior scientific advisory support to businesses, investors, and organizations–to take advantage of cross-cutting executive-level insights to solve specific challenges and identify unique opportunities.
Now more than ever, in the face of a global pandemic like COVID-19, the impact and power of public health and science insights is acutely clear. Let’s work together to come up with solutions that impact the world.
